My Current Books-to-Read List | December 2013

We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shiver

Two years ago Kevin murdered seven classmates and two teachers. Eva Khatchadourian, his mother, now begins to write letters to her absent husband recounts how Kevin became Kevin. In the process she details her fears and hesitations about motherhood and how her shortcomings may have contributed to her son's future.

I first heard about the film adaption of this book and since finding this book in the op shop (by the way an amazing place to find classic books for a few dollars, I don't understand why people would throw these out?!) I grabbed it and now that I finally have time to sit down and read, I'm so excited to finish it.

The Messenger by Markus Zusak

Ed Kennedy accidentally prevents the escape of a bank robber and is now a hero. Shortly after he begins receiving the ace cards of a playing deck in the mail from an unknown source and on each of the the aces is written a series of tasks in code for him to complete.

I've wanted to read this book since finishing The Book Thief which Zusak also wrote and I loved so I have high hopes for this. My friend Gen has also recommended this to me and I can also trust her opinion about books so I'm excited to start this soon.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

This is the complete works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson.

I think it's pretty obvious why I NEED to read these. I love the BBC tv series, I love the movies, I love anything and everything to do with Sherlock (I'm still coming around on Elementary) so it's only proper that I read all of his adventures as well.

Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky

The coming of age story of Charlie who is about to start high school. The book is structured as Charlie writing letters to an unknown recipient about the new friends he makes and new experiences he faced.

Once again another book that needs to be read by young adults. I haven't seen the film yet so I want to read this before I do and everyone and their mothers have raved about this book and the movie.

One Day by David Nicholls

The book follows Dexter and Emma after they graduate from Edinburgh University in 1988 and spend the night together. They don't become involved romantically but this is the beginning of a friendship and the book visits both character on July 15th of every year for twenty years.

My friends have read this book and have raved about it to me. Feeling a bit out of the loop, I've caved to reading it.

1984 by George Orwell

The story of Winston Smith presents the world in 1984 after a global atomic war, via his perception of life in Airstrip One. His intellectual rebellion against the Party and illicit romance with Julia and his consequent imprionment, interrogation, torte and re-education by the Thinkpol in the Miniluv.

The classic Orwell story that I think everyone needs to have a go at. I loved Animal Farm so I'm excited to read more of Orwell's work.

The Rosie Project by  Graeme Simsion

Don Tillman is trying to find the perfect woman for him. One thing he knows is that it is definitely not Rosie. Yet when Don agrees to help Rosie search for her biological father, Don is put out of his comfort zone and finds he is actually enjoying his life.

I've heard great things about this book and after Gen (once again) said she started reading it and she was enjoying it, it was another one to add to this list. The next day I was on the train and the woman opposite me was also reading it and I just knew it was a sign.

Divergent Series by Veronica Roth

In futuristic Chicago, people are divided into five distinct factions based on their personalities. Beatrice "Tris" Prior finds out that she is divergent, meaning she doesn't fit into one faction. Soon she discovers a sinister plot brewing in her seemingly perfect society.

With the movie coming out next year I want to read this before I see it and I've heard so many people say it's really good and compared it to the Hunger Games.

So that's what on my reading list! Are you a big reader? If so what are you reading right now? If not, what do you spend your spare time doing?

Talk to you guys soon
